Dah 11: A day in Pagoh, Johor

In the morning we went to pasar tani (farmer's market) that only runs on Thursdays...

After buying some kuih for breakfast, we went to Pagoh to visit Tok Timah. Her house is getting old and we saw some holes on the roof... Poor Tok Timah.

^ see the ants? ^

Tok Timah is my father-in-law's mother. She refuses to move from that house - so she stays there still. Reminded me of rumah arwah nenek in Kampung Raja back then... She looks well. After a session of tea we took Tok Timah to Mak/Pak Uda's house 10 minutes away (also in Pagoh) for lunch. We ate ketupat palas with rendang ayam. It was excellent. Pak Uda is ayah Aishah's brother.

Thanks for your hospitality and may we meet again InsyaAllah... Oh, did I mention that it was a hot day?

Day 10: Ayer Hitam, Kulai and... an unlikely breakdown.

Today was an exceptionally nice day - we get ready and left for Kulai, Johor in the morning. Kulai (now called Kulaijaya) is the hometown of the new Malay artist Mawi. On the way to Kulai we stopped by Ayer Hitam to look at some tudung.

We also stopped by some stores at the roadside to look at some souvenirs to bring back. The nemo fish keychain we gave Muhsin came from this exact store. We hope he likes it. See all the plush toys in the video... but no toys from One Piece that Kak Cah was looking for...

Arrived right at Zohor, GPS got us there easily. Che Ida cooked lunch (Ayam masak asam pedas) and it was good. Wish them well ~ and thanks for taking the day off for us. We didn't see their kids (in school).

On the way back from Kulai, the car broke down! It lost all power, which I thought was the fuel pump gone bad. PLUS (thank you guys) stopped by within 5 minutes and towed the car out of the highway (dangerous) to the nearest exit.

While sitting and thinking on what to do by the curb, a random guy greeted us (he goes by Adik) and got us help. Apparently he knows a lot of shops around Johor and got tons of connections. We put our faith in Allah and go ahead with his plan. It got us to this Chinese owned Proton shop about 2 km away.

RM 700 and a new distributor brought back life to the Satria. Apparently these things can go bad easily (random life expectency on the unit) - and new was the only way to go to ensure another 100k KM to the car. Oh well, at least it happened to us and not El on his trip back to Perlis, or some other time when we were really far from home...

We thank Allah for giving us help right away after having such inconvenience. With Aishah being pregnant I wasn't sure how long she'd last in the heat (3 pm)... Help was literally given to us without much wait, over and over... and when I thought Malaysia has been lacking good Samaritans - I was wrong. ONE Malaysia might actually be a real thing, and a good thing for all of us.

Day 9: Rainy Tuesday, resting and visiting Elya

Tuesday was a relaxing day, it rained for a couple hours and that night we went to see Elya for a little bit at her house.

We also received a news that Reyma (Meng) Aishah's immediate sister is coming home on Thursday. Aishah was excited as I wasn't interested as much to shop for headcovers... I know nothing about women fasion, period.

Aishah's best friend back in high school, Elya. She's working in Pharmacy @ Batu Pahat Hospital and just got engaged - we're so excited for her. We wish her well.

Day 8: Off to Batu Pahat... a little detour to Segamat

Left Pak Aa's place at about 10:00 am. Thank you again for being such hospitable hosts... Will come again. We went straight to Mak Long's place at Kota Damansara to pick up the stuff for Johor that we left the first day (1 full bag and more).

We left soon after 11:30 to Segamat to see Anya (Aishah's aunt). Anya is a very good cook. Mak can vouch for her cooking - she had some food when she was at Batu Pahat last time. She cooked red fish, some udang and sambal pelam... sedap2. Me stuffing my face. I look pedas.

I fell asleep after having that big lunch. I guess that heat really got to me that day - and driving the windy roads from Tangkak to Segamat.

Left for Batu Pahat at around 5 pm - thank you again Anya for the food. The others were Anya's 2 daughter Mira and Nina. Miraa just got her SPM and looking to go to college, while Nina is still in high school. Last picture is them posing in front of the new Toyota Vios they got (Unser was consuming too much gas).
